California State Assembly member Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento), spent more than an hour on Monday afternoon explaining several parts of his legislative agenda to Sac City students, staff and faculty. McCarty is a freshman state legislator who spent 10 years on the Sacramento City Council prior to his election last November.
He said that new budgeting surpluses have allowed community colleges and the UC/CSU systems to gain back some of the money lost during the Great Recession of 2008-14. But there are still financial and societal challenges to address, he said.
McCarty took questions from the audience on an array of topics after spending time introducing himself to many people in the crowd. About 100 people attended the event in the Student Center.
