New Telescope Ready for Students and Community

The Hulbe Observatory on the roof of Rodda Hall South has a new telescope and mount, thanks to a $40,000 upgrade.
The 17.5-inch PlaneWave reflector telescope is the largest in Sacramento, with an extremely high optical quality and “research-grade” capabilities, according to Astronomy Professor Liam McDaid.
The new telescope was unveiled to the public at a “First Light” event in the early morning hours of Feb. 4 when the planetary alignment of Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Saturn and the moon were observable.
The first open observatory – the monthly event open the general public – with the new telescope will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5.
