What do I need to check out SCC library materials?

You will need your Los Rios Student Access/ID card. This card is available at the SCC West Sacramento Center main office, or on the main campus at the Learning Resource Center 1st floor Instructional Media Desk or Rodda Hall North 138. Your card must be activated to be used as library card.

Where do I activate my Los Rios Student Access/ID card?

Your card can be activated at the SCC West Sacramento Center main office or on the main campus at the Learning Resource Center Instructional Media Desk (1st floor) or Circulation Desk (2nd floor).

Where do I check out reserve library books?

At the Information Desk at the Arthur F. Turner Community Library, located at:

1212 Merkley Avenue
West Sacramento, CA 95691

The Turner Community Library, a branch of the Yolo County Library, is located across the parking lot from the SCC West Sac Center.

How do I know whether books for my class are on reserve?

The easiest way is to use the current Textbook List in the West Sac Center section of the college website. Click the title of the book you want to check out to see if the copy that has the location SCC-West Sac-Turner Library-2 hour shows as "available." Write down the call number of that copy and bring it to the Information Desk at the Turner Community Library.

Books that are not at the Turner Library may still be at other locations such as the SCC main campus. To check for these, go to the online catalog (lois.losrios.edu) to see if the textbook for your class has been placed on reserve. If the book is held at the Turner Community Library, the location will indicate SCC-West Sac-Turner Library-2 hour. For a demonstration of how to look up a textbook, go to scc.losrios.edu/~library/videos.

Where do I return the checked out library books?

Materials should be returned to Turner Community Library Information Desk. If the library is closed, you may use the book drop located outside the Turner Community Library. If the library is open, DO NOT use the book drop. You could incur fines if you use the book drop during the library's open hours.

How long can I check out reserve textbooks for?

Reserve textbooks can be checked out for 2 hours. If you check out a reserve textbook less than two hours before the library closes, it will be due one hour after the library opens the next day.

What if I checked out a reserve textbook and the library will close in less than two hours?

You can either use the book drop box located outside the Turner Community Library or keep the book overnight. The book will be due back one hour after the library opens the next day.

Are SCC reserve materials available for viewing online?

They are not, unless your professor has put tests or other class materials on electronic reserve.

How do I renew reserve materials?

Reserve textbooks cannot be renewed. You will need to wait for 30 minutes before checking out a reserve book for another two hours. Please note that you cannot place a hold on these books and it may not be available after the 30-minute period if another student has checked it out.

What happens if I do not return the books by due date/time?

If you do not return the books by the due date/time, overdue fines will be charged as follows:

  • 2-hour books: $0.50 per hour per item. Maximum: $50.00 or replacement cost (whichever is greater). A processing fee of $10.00 will be added to the replacement cost.
  • Non-reserve circulating books: $0.50 per day per item. Maximum: $20 or replacement cost. A processing fee of $10.00 will be added to the replacement cost.
