Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can check out books?
    Only current students, faculty and staff can check out books.
  2. How many books can I check out at once?
    Students may have up to seven (7) items checked out at any one time, of which two (2) items may be from the Reserve collection.
  3. How do I renew books?
    Students and staff may renew regular circulating books at the Circulation desk or online through the library catalog LOIS. Books may be renewed once online, provided there are no holds. Additional renewals may be made at the Circulation desk at the discretion of library staff.
  4. How do I get a library card?
    Your Student Access Card is your library card. You can obtain this card at the first floor service desk (Instructional Media). You must be a currently registered student and have photo ID with you when you request the card.
  5. How do I pay library fines?
    Students can come to the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor of LRC to pay their library fines. Only cash and checks are accepted. Students can also mail their check of payment to the library. You cannot pay your library fine online. For more information about library fines, please read the Access Services Policy.
  6. Is the library open on weekends?
    The library is open on Saturday from 9:00 - 3:00.
  7. How can I learn to use the library?
    The librarians offer several Drop-in orientations throughout the semester to help students learn how to locate materials in the library, search the online databases, and effectively do research on the Internet.
  8. Does the library have Internet access for students?
    Yes. Students login to the computers using their ID number and password.
  9. Is a wireless connection available in the library?
    Yes, there are wireless connections on all floors in the LRC. 
  10. What databases does the library provide?
    The library subscribes to approximately 50 general and subject-specific databases. 
  11. How can I access the databases from home?
    You can access all of the databases from home with your "w" login number and unified password.
  12. Where can I find my textbooks in the library?
    Many, but not all, current textbooks are on Reserve at the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor of LRC. Use the library catalog to get the call number of the textbook and then go to the Circulation Desk to get your book.
  13. Are there rooms for group study in the library?
    Yes, there are four (4) study rooms on the second floor of the Learning Resource Center for student use. They can seat 4-5 people comfortably. They are equipped with table, chairs and a whiteboard. Dry-erase markers are available at the Reference desk. Groups can sign up at the Reference desk to use the rooms for up to two (2) hours per day.
  14. Can I print in the library?
    Yes, you can print from the library computers. It costs 10 cents per page. You can't print from your laptop computers to the library printers.
  15. How do I get a job in the library?
    Students interested in working at the library should contact Yolanda Escobar (916-558-2467) to apply. Most student workers are part of the Work-Study program, but there are also a few general positions available. Students need to apply before the beginning of the semester because positions fill rapidly.
