The HOPE Center is a hub of free academic support and tutoring services which are available to students enrolled in Health Occupation Programs or considering a career in a health profession. The center has three primary goals: to broaden the horizons of students regarding opportunities for careers in a variety of allied health programs, to support currently enrolled students of nursing and allied health programs, and to recruit and prepare high school students to explore healthcare careers and promote readiness for community college programs. Highlights of the HOPE Center include a fully equipped study center, free tutoring, health career fair, student emergency fund, counseling for educational planning and strategies for student success, and a speaker's bureau on health issues and health related careers.
Pre-Health Occupation AdvisingInterested in a career in a health profession such as nursing, dentistry, occupational therapy, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, or respiratory therapy? The staff at the HOPE Center provides prospective students with basic information on such careers. You may schedule an appointment with a HOPE Center staff or come by during our walk-in hours.
Another excellent starting point to explore health career possibilities is the online Occupational Outlook Handbook. See the occupations listed under health diagnosing and treating occupations, and health technologists and technicians. Other very helpful sites are Explore Health Careers and California Career Zone.
Counseling for Current Health Occupation Students
Besides providing basic information on health care careers, another purpose of the HOPE Center is to assist students who are currently enrolled in a Los Rios Community College District health occupation program. Leila Stone, the HOPE Center counselor provides academic, personal, career, and crisis counseling to health occupation students. The counselor assists students with developing time management plans, identifying study resources, and prioritizing activities in their busy lives. She can help students identify financial resources that can assist students in reaching their academic goals. She can also help students when they need a Student Education Plan (SEP) for a Financial Aid petition.
Students may access the counselor through a scheduled appointment, coming by during walk-in hours, e-mail and/or phone contact. Contact Leila Stone at email@example.com or 916-558-2070 for further information.
Students enrolled in health occupation programs receive free group and individual tutoring through the HOPE Center. Click here for the current tutoring schedule. She assesses the tutoring needs of students and provides resources based on those needs. She recruits, trains, motivates and supervises tutors. She assists with the development and implementation of programs for identifying learner needs in terms of achievable instructional objectives, schedules tutoring services, assists with the evaluation of tutorial services, collects and reports effectiveness data, and performs tutorial services as well. Contact Betsy Guzzetta at GuzzetE@scc.losrios.edu or 916-558-2129 for further information.
The HOPE Center has staff available to make presentations to your school, community group or to attend a career fair at your agency. To schedule an outreach event contact Sue Hussey at 916-650-2767 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Health occupation students can sign up with Sue to do Outreach presentations. This can be an opportunity for students to give back to their community. Each semester there are major health fairs that students can participate in. The HOPE Center has Healthcare Professional Outreach Toolkits available for your use!
