What About Health Insurance?

Domestic Students (citizens of the U.S.)

Do I need health insurance to attend college? Health insurance is not a requirement to attend Sacramento City College unless you are an international student.

Do we recommend that you have health insurance? Yes, it is recommended that students obtain health insurance because you never know when you will get sick or injured. Treatment without insurance can be financially devastating.

Does SCC offer health insurance? No.

How do I choose Health Insurance? Educate yourself by going to CA Office of the Patient Advocate and Frequently Used Insurance Terms. Search online for Student Health Insurance. Start here for some suggestions from Health Services that may have special rates for Los Rios students. Then use the worksheets CA Medical Association Health Plan Checklist or CA Office of the Patient Advocate to compare insurance plans. Remember to consider your unique health needs and budget.

What if I can't afford health insurance and I get sick or hurt? You can come in to SCC Health Services for a consultation to help you decide if you need to see a doctor or not. We can then assist you in finding a health resource in the community if needed. You can also look on the Community Resources page of this site to pick a health provider that fits your needs.

Are you older than 23, younger than 26 and don't have health insurance? If so, as of Sept. 23rd 2010 you are elegible to continue or to reinstate your health insurance through your parents plan.

If an insurance plan other than Wells Fargo of California Insurance Services (http://studentinsurance.wellsfargo.com) is purchased, an insurance waiver form has to be filled out.
