Timing is everything! When Michele Wu, a Fashion Design major at SCC, started interning with 3Poets (www.3poets.com), an online startup that produces an innovative line of mix-and-match outfits for boys ages 6 months to 8 years, she soon discovered that she had struck gold by venturing into a new business that needed and nurtured her talents and abilities. She promoted swiftly from unpaid intern to paid employee, but that's just the beginning of the story.
Sherri Moss, the founder and President of 3Poets, officially opened for business in March 2006. The company launched its "shopping cart" capabilities last fall. Wu, as part of the team who worked on the website update, has been able to share in the ground-floor growth of this young company, participating in everything from cutting and grading to photo shoots and organization. She even provided input into the six lines of clothing. Moss envisions her business expanding quickly to include more interns and employees.
"Working in a small clothing design business gives an intern a lot of experience in various areas," said Wu. Both Wu and Moss encourage fashion design students to get into an internship with a small business, based on their positive experience.
The rest of the story is still to be written, but this talented employer/employee duo, brought together by SCC's Internship Program, shows great promise.
