SCC’s Green Heroes
Individuals making a difference

While departments, divisions, and even professions are uniting to increase awareness of sustainability and "green" issues, there are many individuals doing their part by recycling, bicycling to work, taking public transportation, and integrating "green" issues into their classes.
Following are some of SCC's "Green Heroes."
"I ride my bike to work ¾ of the time. Six miles each way saves $1 each trip in gas costs assuming $4/gallon and 24 miles per gallon. Plus I keep my lights off in my office if I'm alone (the nearby hall light is usually enough)."
-Mark Harbison,
Math Professor
"I teach Death and Dying at night and I devote one night to "green funerals" and "green burial" and we discuss the environmental impact of cemeteries, embalming, use of cement and redwood, etc. Bet you never thought about this!"
-Joanne Moylan-Aube,
Sociology Professor
"I and Children's Theatre Professor Doug Lawson will be writing and directing a show for The Penny Whistle Players called 'The Green Team Adventures.' The children's play will tour local elementary schools and is about superheroes for the planet and their quest to save the earth from destruction."
-Angela Dee Alforque,
Ethnic Theatre Professor
"I lecture on global warming in most of my geology courses."
-Kathryn Stanton,
Geology Professor
"I use Light Rail instead of driving because it saves money and time that I would spend on gas and parking. I've established relationships with some people I've been riding with for years. Also, it's good for the environment-one less car on the road-and it's convenient and fast."
-Robert Kelly,
Information Technology
