    SCC Goes Green

Education will play a central role in building a "green" future and SCC, through creativity and innovation on the "green front," is taking the lead teaching students to live sustainably in their personal lives while creating and revamping businesses and business practices that will nourish the planet's health now and for future generations.

SCC is "going green" by infusing environmental awareness into everything the college does. From course curriculum to "green" technology to keeping tabs on the school's own recycling and reducing, the college is taking environmental awareness seriously.

Sustainability and environmental awareness is a collective effort, bringing college departments and divisions together in an exciting effort to create new curricula that will teach students how to live and work in a way that protects our environment and conserves our resources. SCC aims to teach students how to live in a sustainable manner, the benefits of sustainability for both individuals and for society in general, and the consequences if society does not commit to sustainable practices.

"When 'green' thinking is truly integrated into everything we do," said Donnetta Webb, Dean of the Advanced Technology Department at Sacramento City College, "then we will have accomplished our goal."

Emphasis on creating a sustainable world runs the gamut at SCC, from Chemistry and Biology classes that expose students to an environmental rationale for sustainable practices, to the Graphic Communications Department, which is integrating concepts of sustainability and environmental responsibility into their educational offerings and work processes.

Inside you will find highlights from a few of SCC's programs, departments, and student groups that are living and teaching in a "green/clean" manner-affecting change in the student population that will spread throughout the state, the nation, and the world. The environmental fundamentals of sustainability, cradle-to-cradle design, source reduction, innovation, and viability underlie the goals for each program, department or club that is highlighted in this publication.

As we as a culture begin to reconsider how we do the business of living our lives, SCC aims to educate the region through its students and by helping to foster economic activity around renewable resources and efficienct, responsible use of resources.
