Please encourage students to sign up for a iMail Student Email account. Students may activate accounts through the "E-Mail (Student)" link from the pull down menu on the main SCC page or through eServices (option number 20). iMail is web-based, Desire 2 Learn friendly and easy to use since user names are assigned based on the student's true first and last name.
Weekly campus announcements are distributed to all iMail accounts (over 7,000 current users). Email should be of general interest to students. Email for commercial or proprietary work or for personal or other non-college business will not be distributed. If you have an item to share, please send it exactly as you want it to appear to woollen@scc.losrios.edu. Attachments and creative formatting don't transfer well -- please send plain text only. Your email needs to reach me by the Thursday evening of the week you want the message distributed. A digest is sent every Friday morning.
E-mail for staff may be sent to Nelle Moffett, planning, research & institutional effectiveness, for possible distribution through e-News. SCC e-News provides information about activities of the standing committees, accomplishments, resource materials, issues that may impact the college, and other related topics. A Table of Contents for governance-related on-line resources is located in Public Folders under SCC Workgroup/Participatory Decision-Making. Past issues of SCC e-News are archived in public folders under SCC Community/SCC e-News.
E-mail may also be sent directly to everyone on the exchange, but to avoid taxing the system, it is recommended that messages be incorporated into other campus publications whenever possible. E-mail should be of general interest to the target audience, short, contain few if any graphics, and be related to campus or district business.
- According to a report in EDUCAUSE review, higher education classes use E-mail to connect students to faculty and other students. E-mail also brings adjunct faculty more directly into contact with students.
- Give readers a call to action when sending E-mail, such as "you can register now."
- While on vacation or break, utilize the "out of office" feature. Let readers know when you will return to answer their messages and provide an alternative E-mail or phone number when available.
