Dr. Kathryn E. Jeffery with Mike and Dr. Gwen Joy, who established the Jean Stephens Memorial Endowment.
An endowment established by Mike and Dr. Gwen Joy will benefit two journalism students annually with $500 scholarships. The scholarship memorializes former journalism instructor Dr. Jean Stephens, referred to fondly as Doc by her students. Stephens taught journalism for more than 30 years at SCC and is remembered as a motivating force determined to see her students reach their goals.
The Joys wanted to honor Stephens, a close friend. Mike Joy studied under Stephens in 1962-63 and later worked as a photojournalist editor. The Joys taught English at a community college in Japan for 30 years. Though Mike is retired, Gwen now teaches at Sierra College and works in the Disabled Students Programs and Services Department.
