Faculty Toolkit

The following instructional technology tools are available to faculty teaching distance education or traditional courses at SCC. Some of these tools integrate directly into the D2L learning management system(LMS), while others require you to use third-party websites. The notations described below will tell you which tools are supported by SCC, integrate into D2L, or are external, third-party tools.

D2L LogoThe D2L icon means that this application can be integrated or embedded within the Desire2Learn (D2L) LMS. COVE staff can assist in understanding how to embed or integrate these tools in D2L.

 

Red External ArrowThe red arrow icon means this is an additional or external application / tool. These are free or fee-based tools that can help you add various instructional technology elements into your course(s). SCC does not provide technical support for these tools.

Academic Honesty & Plagiarism Detection

Turnitin Plagiarism Protection

SCC LogoD2L LogoTurnitin-LogoTurnItIn is a plagiarism prevention service that is made available to all SCC faculty through a site license. The TurnItIn service can be accessed in one of two ways, either through an integrated dropbox in D2L, or by manually submitting papers to the TurnItIn website.

Accessibility Review

WAVE Accessibility Evaluation Tool

Red External ArrowWAVE-LogoWAVE Accessibility Evaluation Tool checks the accessibility of online content by either entering in an URL on the WAVE website or downloading the WAVE Toolbar add-on for FireFox. This is a free, third-party tool. SCC does not provide technical support for this tool.

Collaboration and Productivity Tools

Google Apps at Los Rios (Education Edition)

SCC Logogoogle education app logoOnline productivity and collaboration apps (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Presentations) that require no software download! All Los Rios faculty and students can log in to their Google Apps account using their W+ID and Los Rios unified password. This account also includes free online file storage for almost any kind of file, using Google Drive.

Pixlr – Online Photo Editing

Red External ArrowPixlr LogoPixlr provides a free, web-based photo editing tool. Multiple versions are available, including efficient, advanced, and mobile versions.

Conferencing and Virtual Classroom

CCC Confer

SCC LogoCCC Confer LogoCCC Confer offers free online web-conferencing to California Community College faculty, staff, and students. With CCC Confer you can present and share information using video, audio and chat. Closed-captioning is available upon request, and presentations can be archived so that they can be accessed at anytime. Options include multi-line telephone conferencing, computer + telephone / VOIP conferencing. This is a great tool for virtual office hours or group meetings.

Lynda.com – Online Training Library

SCC LogoLynda LogoAll faculty teaching distance education courses now have access to lynda.com, an online subscription library that teaches the latest software tools and skills through high-quality instructional videos taught by recognized industry experts.

By checking out a license through the COVE, you can access more than 1,400 training videos in a broad range of subjects including business skills, photography, design, music and video, animation, and web design and development. New courses are added every week.
Access the lynda.com library 24/7—even from an iPhone, iPad, Android device, or other mobile device—and watch an entire course or single tutorial video as needed. Exercise files are provided to help you follow along with the instruction as you learn, and bookmarks help you keep track of what you’d like to watch.

Screencasting Tools

Camtasia

SCC LogoD2L LogoCamtasia LogoCamtasia Studio/Camtasia for Mac is a tool which can be used to publish video lectures or demonstrations for teaching that can be either be recorded or shown in realtime. Camtasia can also be used in combination with PowerPoint to create narration for presentations, as well as transcribe audio tracks for captioning on videos created in Camtasia.

This software may be installed on any college-owned computer under the current licensing agreement. To request an installation on your college workstation, please contact the Instructional Development staff at instrdev@scc.losrios.edu.

Screencastomatic

Red External ArrowScreencastomatic-LogoScreencast-O-Matic is a screen capture creator which you can use either online or by downloading to your computer. There are two plans to choose from – the free plan lets you record up to 15 minutes of video and then upload it to YouTube. Screencastomatic does have a captioning feature, alternately, videos can be uploaded and captioned in YouTube.

Red External ArrowScreenr-LogoScreenr is an online free screencasting tool. All screencasts are stored publicly and can be uploaded to the web. Screenr videos can be uploaded and captioned in YouTube.

RubiStar

Red External ArrowRubistar LogoRubiStar is a free tool to help instructors create quality rubrics. RubiStar provides generic rubrics that can simply be printed (including to a PDF format) and used for many typical projects and research assignments. The unique thing about RubiStar is that it provides these generic rubrics in a format that can be customized. The instructor can change almost all suggested text in the rubric to make it fit their own project.

D2L Quiz Question CSV Generator

The D2L Quiz Question CSV Generator Tool allows you to easily create Desire2Learn-ready CSV (comma separated value) files from existing quiz or exam documents. You can copy your question & answer text into the tool directly from programs such as Microsoft Word, iWork Pages or any other word processing/text editing programs, and after some slight reformatting and simple markup addition, quickly import your questions & answers into a D2L Question Library.
