New Faculty Guide

Welcome to SCC!

This guide will cover the must-know tech in the classroom details for new instructors.

Before your classes begin, think about the kind of technology you want to use in the classroom. Most SCC instructors use the Desire2Learn (D2L) course management system but you are not required to use it. There are other options such as WordPress, Moodle, Sakai, etc.–however, most SCC students are familiar with D2L, reducing the student learning curve. If you would like to explore other options, please contact us to schedule an appointment and we can help you find what works best for your classroom.

D2L

If you would like to use D2L, begin by requesting your D2L classes at the Employee Self Service Page (or D2L Course Request Link on the left navigation menu). Watch this short video to find out how.

Next, go to sleep. When you wake up tomorrow morning your courses will be waiting for you. While you wait, take a few minutes to look at this video for a brief overview of D2L. Then check out the workshop or drop-in schedule for in-person D2L support. The D2L QuickStart is another great resource!

Google Apps

SCC students use Los Rios Gmail for their student e-mail accounts. You must use Outlook for e-mail but you can also log-in to Los Rios Google Apps to use Google Drive, Calendar, Sites, and more.

PRO TIP–You may keep student grades in your Los Rios Google Drive. Google has contracted with Los Rios to maintain the privacy of these accounts and comply with obligations under FERPA. Do not keep grades in a personal Google drive.

PRO TIP–Some of your students may not be aware that they have an e-mail account. Please remind all students at the beginning of the term to log-in weekly to their Los Rios Gmail. All of your communication with them via e-mail or D2L will go to this account. Students may also set up a forwarding email address if they wish to use a different primary e-mail account.

For more information, check out the Google Apps Guide.
