Sacramento City College Deaf Culture and American Sign Language Department provides academic coursework based on a Deaf-centered framework that encourages students to embrace an empowered collaboration with Deaf people.
The Deaf Studies Program will:
Prepares students with a basic understanding of and appreciation for their roles in local, regional, national, and global Deaf-Hearing relations and how those relationships impact Deaf people.
Deaf Studies has two main core strands:
Presents Deaf Studies courses based on Deafhood frameworks such as American Sign Language, Sign Linguistics, Deaf Education, Literature, Deaf psychology, Mental Health and Wellness, and Interpreting.
Maintains current trends in Deaf Studies; expanding much-needed courses and fields in Deaf Studies, including culture, sociology, anthropology, history, arts, business, politics, and media doing so through a Deaf-centered lens.
