The Staff Resource Center continues with the theme “Plan it. Work it. Finish it.” In building upon the spring 2014 Student Success Charette activity, we focus the fall on implementing a professional development program that continues to propel SCC to higher student success outcomes. The programming of activities reflects a shift in focus toward the outcomes outlined in the Community College Professional Development Program (AB 2558) and the Student Success Act of 2012.
Together, these programs and initiatives promote an institutionally sound and integrated focus around student success. We are also using the data collected in the spring 2014 MY VOICE COUNTS” (My Professional Development Needs & Wants) Survey. In doing so, these voices help offer a professional development program that is efficient, effective, and relevant to all classifications of SCC employees.
The programming for Wednesday, August 20, 2014 will focus on technology and current interest workshops relevant to all classifications of SCC employees. The development of Wednesday’s programming was aided by data collected in the Spring 2014 “MY VOICE COUNTS” survey as well as attendance rates and workshop evaluation data from past “Tech Wednesday” activities, with the primary goal of providing technical training that helps to facilitate student success and professional growth. Workshops will provide training on topics including D2L, Google Apps, the SCC Web Style Guide, and other technologies used at SCC.
As with Tech Wednesday, the design of Thursday’s programming was also partially informed by survey data and past workshop evaluation data, offering many essential professional development workshops on topics ranging from student success, accreditation, the new Lync phone system, campus safety, as well as a few department/division-specific workshops. There will also be an activity titled “A 360° Approach to Student Success: The Impact of Policy, Soft Skills, & Contact in the Community College Environment.” This event will be a continuation of the conversations had during the Spring 2014 Student Success Charette activity. Using student case studies to lead and inspire the conversation, the discussion will be facilitated by at least one member of each SCC employment classification and at least one student, focusing on the implementation of the ideas gathered in the Charette Report.
This event will spearhead our goal of working toward both campus policies and a campus culture that promote the shared responsibility of student success among all classifications of SCC employees. This includes building connections with students, keeping regular contact with students, and cultivating a standard of faculty, staff, and student behavior that helps students to more successfully operate and maneuver within the community college system. This conversation and process will continue during the Division Deans Charette meetings at Convocation and as a common theme woven throughout our future professional development programming. We highly recommend that all faculty, classified staff and management staff members attend!
We look forward to your participation and feedback.
