Hispanic Serving Institution
What does being a Hispanic Serving Institution mean?
A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that:
- is an eligible institution; and
- has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic (Chicanx/Latinx) students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.
There are currently 572 HSI colleges and universities, 170 are in California.
What does being a Hispanic Serving Institution mean for SCC?
Being an HSI designated campus is so much more than receiving a grant. It is about embracing the identity of being Chicanx/Latinx serving and leaning into the values and mission of the college to better serve our students. It is about creating an environment where students feel seen and served. Although Sacramento City College is a Hispanic Serving Institution, our Comunidad has chosen to identify with the Chicanx/Latinx term.
At SCC we are focusing on strengthening the “serve” in Hispanic Serving Institution. We hope students feel that being a Hispanic Serving Institution means they can feel confident that they are surrounded by students, faculty, staff and administrators that share their experiences.

Caminos De La Ciudad / City Pathways
Sacramento City College has developed Caminos de la Ciudad, a project designed to create a seamless transition from Freshman Seminar to the second semester of college, while providing a continued pathway and support to students as they enroll in a major course and complete both English and math in their first year of college.
HSI Early College Program
The HSI Early College Program (HSI-ECP) focuses on early college initiatives and introduces our Latinx and low-income high school students to college via participation in Dual Enrollment.

Ethnic Studies Program
The Ethnic Studies Program at Sacramento City College is open to all students and serves as a response to the needs, demands, and experiences of Sacramento’s minority communities.
