Let me introduce myself! I am the Faculty Program Coordinator of the SCC Work Experience Education and Internship Program. My new position started in July 2013, after working in various other career development programs here at Sacramento City College since 2005. I am honored to be a part of such a vital career program for students and be involved in their transition from college to work. Since my career began at SCC in 2005, my positions have included Employment Specialist for the Workability III Program doing job development for students with disabilities; Career Advisor for the Career Center; and an Adjunct Counselor for the Disability Resource Center and College to Career Program. My education includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocational Educaiton and Rehabilitation from California State University, Sacramento and a Master’s Degree in Career Counseling in Higher Educaiton, from Chapman University. When I am not doing program coordination, I enjoy volunteering and being outdoors. I am a volunteer for Inner City Outings, Sierra Club as a whitewater raft guide and outdoor leader helping inner city young adults get outdoors, rafting, hiking and learning about the environment. I am passionate about engaging students in career development and helping them pursue their dreams! Please come by and visit our program at SCC in Rodda North 147, you never know where the next door may lead!

May Yang, Internship Developer

Howdy! This is my fourth year working in the Work Experience and Internship Program. I enjoy working with a diverse student body and preparing them to enter the workforce in their majors. As an Internship Developer, it has allowed me to meet with employers and discuss the latest trends. The position has also enabled me to interact with students at all levels and encourage them to strive for their career dreams. As a 2008 UC Berkeley graduate, I know the difficulty of looking for a full-time job. An internship is a great way to boost up a resume, get your foot in the door, and a great way to network!

Poonam Kelkar, Work Experience Instructor
Welcome. I come with 18 years of experience in non-profit and education, including being a manager in student housing at two universities, a mediator for renters and owners in dispute, a case manager for low income families, and at Sacramento City College, an advisor in our career center, counselor, and instructor. I have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Counseling. I was born abroad but spent a good 20 years growing up in Hawaii. I love to travel, especially to foreign countries, I love to watch TV, and I’m a self-proclaimed news junkie. Working with students has always been my career goal, and I am passionate about students developing their professional skills to transition from the classroom to the work environment. I hope you will take advantage of our great program while pursuing your own educational and career goals.

Estelita Spears, Work Experience Instructor
Greetings from the wonderful world of “Work Experience”! I am the Professor Estelita Spears that you may have heard of from some of the other students here at SCC! Some of you may even recognize me as one of the instructor for the ever popular “Human Career Development “courses that many first-time students take. I’ve have had the pleasure of teaching career related courses for the Los Rios District for the past 15 years. Prior to that, I was “The Welfare Lady,” a name given to me by my students, as I also taught career exploration courses for the Department of Social Services in West Sacramento for many years. I currently work as an Academic/Career Counselor for Woodland Community College.
