City Golfers Keep Bringing Home the Titles
The City College Women's Golf team is unstoppable! After winning another Big 8 Championship, the lady Panthers went on to win the college's first ever state championship on Tuesday, November 17, when they took away the 2009 California Community College Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship. Not only was it the Panthers' first State Championship, but it was also the first women's golf State Championship by a Northern California school since its inception in 1995.
Join us in congratulating the team as well as Coach Tim Kiernan, who has been with City College for 28 years. Kiernan is also the only coach in City College history to win State Championships in two different sports, one in women's golf and three in softball.

The Impact of the UC Fee Hike on Community Colleges
Los Rios Community College District Chancellor Brice Harris was interviewed yesterday, November 19, by News 10, on the topic of how UC fee hikes and CSU enrollment caps are affecting community colleges.
Harris discussed the 10 percent increase in student enrollment at the district level.
"In our case," Harris said, "we're currently running about 15 percent over [our] cap. So that means that every class of 20 students, we have three students for whom we receive no state support."

The Pacific Garbage Patch
Have you ever wondered where miscellaneous debris and bits and pieces that don't make it to landfills go? To a gyre in the Pacific, it seems. The "Plastic Vortex" or the "Garbage Patch," as that zone is called, is a constantly evolving area in the North Pacific to which litter from all over the world converges. The Staff Resource Center is pleased to welcome Dr. Margie Gassel with CalEPA, who recently returned from the Pacific Garbage Patch. Dr. Gassel will discuss Project Kaisei, whose mission it is to study the North Pacific Gyre and to find ways to retrieve the debris and detoxify and recycle it into diesel fuel. This is a great opportunity for the environmentally conscious and the scientific community to engage in a dialogue on a little known phenomenon. For more information, go to www.projectkaisei.org - Monday, November 23, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in LR 105.

Paper Be Gone!
Earlier in the semester, the Public Information Office, in collaboration with the Planning, Research & Institutional Effectiveness Office, surveyed a randomly selected sample of students, asking them about their use of the printed and online class schedules. The students polled overwhelmingly used the online schedule, and responded that they would not miss the printed schedule, should it be discontinued. And we listened! As a result, for the first time, City College will not be printing a Class Schedule. This forward-thinking move is gentle not only on the environment, but also on the budget. Win-win situation? We think so!
