The Veterans Affairs Office offers a variety of programs to Veterans and to dependentsof deceased or disabled Veterans who may qualify for federal and state educational programs.

If you:

Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty, Chapter 30
The Montgomery GI Bill establishes a program of educational benefits for eligible persons entering military service after June 30, 1985. Military pay is reduced each month for the first 12 months of duty service in order to establish an educational fund. The maximum entitlement is 36 months of full-time benefits. Monthly benefit rates are determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Benefits terminate 10 years after date of separation.

Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve, Chapter 1606
To be eligible for educational assistance, a person must have a 6-year obligation to serve in the selected reserve signed after June 30, 1985. Maximum entitlement is 36 months of full-time benefits which terminate ten years from the date of eligibility or separation date from reserves, whichever is earlier.

Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP), Chapter 1607
REAP was established as a part of the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. It is a new Department of Defense education benefit program designed to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency (contingency operation) as declared by the President or Congress. This new program makes certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits.

Survivors and Dependents, Chapter 35
Survivors and dependents of a Veteran may be eligible for benefits if the veteran died while on active duty; died after discharge from active duty of a service-connected disability; is permanently and totally disabled as a result of a service-connected disability; or listed as missing in action for a total or more than 90 days. Eligible persons are entitled to a maximum of 45 months of full-time benefits. Payments are usually provided for children between ages of 18 and 26.

Vocational Rehabilitation, Chapter 31
Vocational Rehabilitation is a program whose primary function is to help Veterans with service-connected disabilities become suitably employed, maintain employment, or achieve independence in daily living. The program offers a number of services to help each eligible disabled Veteran reach his or her rehabilitation goal.These services include vocational and personal counseling, education and training, financial aid, job assistance, and, if needed, medical and dental treatment.Services generally last up to 48 months, but they can be extended in certain instances. California Dependents of Veterans College Fee Waiver Program
Students who are a dependent of a Veteran with a service-connected disability or who died of a service-connected cause may be eligible to receive a waiver of tuition and registration fees through this program. Application forms may be obtained at SCC Veterans Office or by contacting the local county veterans service officer, listed in the telephone directory under "County Government." Approved authorization forms must be submitted to the Veterans Service Office, located at 2007 19th Street, Sacramento, California, 95818. Click here for a Dependent Fee Waiver application. Your "Letter of Authorization" should be hand carried to SCC Veterans Office before you register.

Advance Pay Option
New students, or students who did not attend the previous term (including summer) may request certification with "Advance Pay," but must do so at least 35 days prior to the first day of the term. Students interested in advance pay should notify the SCC Veterans Office at the time they are requesting certification, as a separate signature is required. Department of Veterans Affairs will subsequently forward a benefit check to the college, which includes pay in advance for the first two calendar months of the term.

Withdrawing From Class(es)
The law requires that students notify the Sacramento City College Veterans Office of a withdrawal from course(s). The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) will adjust or terminate benefits retroactive to the beginning date of the term. If the change of enrollment is due to reasons beyond the student's control, which DVA accepts as mitigating circumstances, benefits are adjusted on the effective date of the reduction. Form 21-4138, Statement In Support of Claim, must be filed for consideration.

Mitigating Circumstances
Mitigating circumstances are those which directly hinder a student's pursuit of a course(s) and which are judged to be beyond the student's control. Following are some general categories of mitigating circumstances: serious illness of the student, serious illness or death of an immediate family member, immediate family or financial obligations, discontinuance of a course by the school.

Variable-Unit Courses
Sacramento City College
offers courses in which students may earn more units per semester. These courses are structured so that the amount of credit earned depends upon the amount of creditable work completed. The Department of Veterans Affairs requires that enrollment be certified for the minimum number of units attempted, followed by an updated certification at the end of the semester reflecting the actual number of units earned.

Veterans Academic Progress
A Veteran student on Academic or Progress probation status will be disqualified when his/her grade point average (GPA) falls below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters. The SCC Veterans Office is required to notify the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) of this status. The DVA will terminate benefits unless it can be shown that the student is pursuing an appropriate objective and has a reasonable chance for success in the chosen program. Final Term
During a student's final term only, if at least one course meets a requirement per the student's Veterans Affairs Educational Planner, all additional courses taken that term may be certified regardless of whether the courses are required.
