Library Education and Career Options

The Library and Information Technology Program at Sacramento City College has been training library staff to work more capably and comfortably within library settings since 1969.

Our courses cover Internet searching, reference sources, technical services and cataloging.  Upon completion of the program, students will have an understanding of the library profession and the important role of paraprofessional staff.  Students will be better prepared to work in a library environment.

Students take classes in our program for a variety of reasons: to obtain an A.S., to obtain the Career Certificate or simply to update their skills.  Some of our students move on to the Library Media Teacher Services Credential Program at California State University Sacramento or to the Library and Information Science Program at San Jose State University.

A.S. Degree or Career Certificate

Associate in Science (A.S.)

The Associate in Science degree may be obtained by completion of all courses in the career certificate program, plus general education requirements and sufficient electives to meet a 60 unit total.

Career Certificate

The Certificate may be obtained by completion of all of the courses in the required program with a minimum grade of "C", plus approval of the Library and Information Technology Department.
