The Sac City Music Department will present Messiah 2.0, a free community sing-a-long of the famed oratorio, on Saturday, April 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
George Frideric Handel’s Messiah was originally meant to be an Easter offering, having been performed first in Dublin, Ireland, on April 13, 1742. These days, Messiah is normally a fixture of the Christmas season. But Sac City is bringing it back to almost its original date some 272 years later. An oratorio is similar to opera except that nothing is staged; it is simply sung.
For many amateur choirs, Messiah is the heart of their repertoire and the high point of the year. The words come from many of the books of the Bible, including Isaiah and Psalms.
Community members are encouraged to join the chorus which, as one conductor said, “propels the work forward with great emotional impact and uplifting messages.”
Tickets to the event are free, and can be obtained by visiting Eventbrite.
