Sacramento City College formally introduced itself Tuesday, Sept. 15, as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) during a lunchtime ceremony that included a ribbon cutting, free cake and a great concert.
SCC has been designated an HSI college by virtue of the fact that more than 25% of all students claim Hispanic/Latino background. In fact, Sac City is now more than 29% Hispanic/Latino, representing the single highest racial/ethnic group at the college.
As an HSI college, SCC can apply for federal grants, through the United States Department of Agriculture, to provide more services for students. SCC has applied for available grants and is awaiting word on whether the application has been accepted.
In addition, Tuesday was Mexican Independence Day.
