SCC Student Earns Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship

Ty Perez, a Chemical Biology major at SCC, was awarded one of the nation’s highest community college scholarships on May 18 – the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship, named for the former owner of the San Diego Chargers, Chrysler Building and Washington Redskins.

The award comes with up to $40,000 per year for three years to fully fund Ty’s education at U.C. Berkeley, where he will continue his studies in the fall. It can also be used to fund graduate degrees in the future.

“I was honestly pretty worried about how I was going to pay for everything, ” Ty said after meeting with Interim President Michael Poindexter. “This will make it like the red carpet.”

Ty (right in the photo above) joins 2014 Jack Kent Cooke winner Jason Liu, a former SCC student who has been attending Cal for two years, as recipients of this prestigious award.

Congratulations to them both!
