What Is Career Development?

Career development is the process of exploring and learning what your own interests, skills, and values are, research potential occupations and majors that are of interest to you, and planning action steps to reach your goals.

The Career Center takes a holistic approach to career development, subscribing to a 5 – element process:

  • Self-Exploration & Awareness
  • Research Occupations
  • Make Choices
  • Explore the World of Work
  • Job Search

These elements occur in a variety of orders, with people needing different elements at different times. It is expected that a person would cycle through career development process several times during one’s lifetime.

Each element of the process is addressed through a combination of services that can be coordinated through the Career Center staff. There are options for students & alumni to choose self-help or to engage in more intensive and comprehensive services with skilled counselors.

The Career Center is theory-based, including a Holland-based Major Finder and reference library designed to help people find information on any career of their choosing.
