Textbooks and Course Reserves FAQ

What are textbook reserves?

Reserves are materials assigned for current classes that the Library makes available for short-term checkout. Items that may be placed on reserve include textbooks, articles, chapters, videos, class notes, study guides, and other course materials. Both library-owned and instructor-owned materials may be placed on reserve.

How long can I borrow a textbook or reserve item?

Most items have a 2-hour loan period, although some can be checked out for longer.

Where are the textbooks and reserve items located?

Textbooks on reserve are kept at the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor of the library. To borrow a reserve textbook, you need to bring the call number and have your student ID card with you. You also need to be currently enrolled in classes at SCC or another Los Rios college.

How do I find the call number?

Once you've located the book, look for the call number in the box below the book description. Click on the book to view the locations and status to make sure it is at Sacramento City College Library, and is currently available for checkout.

How do I know if my textbook is available now?

When you’ve located the book in OneSearch, if the Location area says “Available” or “Reshelving,” the book is available to be checked out. If it says "checked out", click further to find out when it is due back.

Can I put a textbook on hold?

No, reserve textbooks are available first-come, first-served basis. In some cases, a different Los Rios library may have a copy of the same textbook that is not on reserve; in this case, you could request that copy via OneSearch and pick it up at the SCC library.
