At the Writing Center, we have great people on staff. They are all knowledgeable and come from a diverse background. Our tutors are current Los Rios students while our instructional assistants are current MA TESOL students at Sacramento State.
My name is Dana Armstrong, and I am the faculty coordinator of the West Sacramento Writing Center. My education began at Modesto Junior College where I took advantage of several work and study abroad programs. I eventually transferred to U.C. Berkeley where I studied Comparative Literature. After graduating, I lived in Mexico for five months, studying Spanish and traveling around the country. I earned my graduate degree from U.C. Davis and have also taken Composition courses at San Francisco State University. I began my teaching career at Chabot College in Hayward and now have been teaching at Sacramento City College for nearly twenty years. In my spare time, I enjoy being with my family, swimming, and walking my dog, Dewey.
Hello! My name is Ashley Vargas. I recently moved to Sacramento from Chico where I completed my Bachelors in English Education from Chico State and received my TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate. I am currently a master’s student at Sacramento State majoring in TESOL. Once I graduate, I plan to teach English abroad in South Korea and eventually all over the world. When I’m not at school, doing homework, or working at the WS Writing Center, I enjoy listening to music, exploring the city, trying new food, fostering cats, and swimming. If you have any questions or just want to chat, please feel free to come visit at the Writing Center or email me!

Hello! My name is Mikenna Sims. I recently graduated from California State University, Long Beach with my Bachelor’s degree in English Education. I now attend Sac State and am pursuing a Master’s degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a certificate in Teaching Composition. After completing my graduate coursework, I hope to work as an ESL writing instructor at a California community college. When I’m not in class or tutoring at the WSC Writing Center, I like to spend my time gardening, reading, and taking my dog on hikes. If you have any questions—about writing or college-life in general— please do not hesitate to ask!

Hi, my name is Matthew Metzger and I am a current student at Sacramento City College. I am majoring in English and, eventually, I want to enter the field of Technical Writing. I have always had an interest in technology which stemmed from me going to an Engineering & Science focused high school. Besides my interest in technology, I enjoy the great outdoors by going on hikes and camping. Nevertheless, I am a laid back person who is willing to help students with assignments.

Hello! My name is Reese Lee. I have been a student at Sacramento City College for four years. In my time here, I have gotten involved in theatre, found a love for creative writing, and awakened a thirst for learning. Most days you can find me tucked away reading a good history book, as I try to piece together society’s past and my place in it. I am currently studying psychology, and after my studies, I hope to begin work as a counselor. Right now, I am excited to start as a writing tutor!
